In 2007 the European Commission launched the Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative, a 1.6B€ Public Private Partnership engaging first the 16 leading aerospace companies in Europe, and subsequently hundreds of associate and subcontract companies within the supply chain.
The aim of the programme is to develop and demonstrate technologies which give improved environmental performance to future aerospace products, driven particularly by the ACARE Goals to dramatically reduce emissions and noise.
Significant technical progress was made in 2010/2011, and the first technologies have now undergone flight demonstration, so it is an appropriate time to take stock of the programme and assess what it may offer the next generation of civil aircraft.
